10% or 90%? The Choice is Yours

It’s not what happens to you—but what you do about it.

If you don’t know this already: people die. Marriages end. Illness lingers. Accidents happen. Bank accounts empty. And aging? Let’s just say, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Years ago, I heard Charles Swindoll say, “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond.” That truth has stayed with me. What makes us special as human beings is the dignity of choice.

Joseph’s brothers chose revenge. Joseph chose God and goodness. Those two roads—revenge and righteousness—don’t run parallel. They end in very different places.

Nothing highlights the fairness of God like the gift of human choice.

Joshua once said to a generation on the brink of their future:

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

What a declaration. What a direction.

We are not animals driven by instinct or puppets pulled by strings. We are made in the image of God—with the divine freedom to choose. Ten percent may hit you hard, but the ninety percent can still win the day.

I see the 10% in those who fold under hardship.
But I see the 90% in people who rise, even after unspeakable loss.
The 10% chooses victimhood.
The 90% builds again after fire, storm, or failure.
The 10% blames.
The 90% reinvents—from ex-offenders to entrepreneurs, from homeless to homeowners, from unhealthy to unstoppable.

Your life doesn’t get better by chance—it gets better by choice.

So… 10% or 90%?

Choose well.
