Beyond Punishment

Christians, our history is messy. From the Crusades to denominational splits, we’ve often been known more for punishing and dividing than for loving. But the world doesn’t need more critics or punishers—it needs people who, like Jesus, will weep with the wounded and stand with the broken.

Jonah is our mirror. He adored God’s mercy for himself but resented it for Nineveh. He wanted judgment, not grace. Many of us fall into the same trap—clinging to a punitive image of God that justifies our anger, control, and “tit-for-tat” justice. But punishment can’t heal the world. Only grace can.

Grace disrupts our systems. It welcomes prodigals, pays last-hour workers, and embraces us before we clean ourselves up. It feels risky, but it’s the only way transformation comes.

So ask yourself: Do others see in you the God of punishment—or the God of Jesus, who came not to condemn but to save? Your image of God is the God others experience through you.

Choose love. Choose grace. Like Jonah, let God heal your image of Him—and reflect His mercy to a world still aching for it. ?✨
