Struggling to Receive Grace?

Grace is everywhere—overflowing, unearned, unconditional. Yet many of us struggle to receive it. Why?
    •    Ego resists grace. Like the Pharisee in Luke 18, we want to prove ourselves. But God isn’t impressed by competency—He desires intimacy. Grace humbles us because it’s a gift, not a trophy.
    •    A Santa Claus mindset blocks grace. Jonah wanted grace for “his people” and judgment for the Ninevites. But Scripture says, “The grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people” (Titus 2:11). Grace is not earned. It’s for everyone.
    •    A wrong image of God distorts grace. If you picture God as a scale-keeper—measuring, rationing, rewarding—you’ll always feel shortchanged. But the vineyard parable reminds us: grace is abundant, unfairly generous, and always more than enough.

I once watched my father-in-law model this beautifully. He was a giver all his life, but in his later years, I saw him receive—allowing others to care for him with humility and peace. That’s grace: knowing how to give and how to receive.

The real question is—can you? Can you let God love you without earning it? Can you receive without resisting?
