Running Through the Tape

“Not that I have already obtained all this or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
— Philippians 3:12

Spiritual growth isn’t a science experiment—it’s a journey. God meets us where we are and walks us forward step by step. No one misses a stage, and no one is left behind. Paul makes it clear: Christ Himself is the goal (Philippians 3:12, 14). The question is not how fast are we running, but how are we growing?

Paul compares the Christian life to a race. Others may see their journey as wrestling, boxing, or even undercover work, but the point is the same: God gives the increase. Paul’s “running” analogy isn’t about speed. Michael Yaconelli once said, “Spiritual growth does not happen by running faster. What keeps many of us from growing is not sin but speed. … Speed has a deafening roar that drowns out the whispering voices of our souls and leaves Jesus as a diminishing speck in the rearview mirror.”

Paul’s race is less about pace and more about purpose. Here are three F’s that capture his mindset as he “runs through the tape” spiritually:
    1.    Focused on the Goal – Paul longed for ultimate transformation into Christ’s likeness (Philippians 3:20-21). He knew he wasn’t finished yet, but he was fixed on his heavenly citizenship and the glorious future Christ had secured for him.
    2.    Forgetting What’s Behind – You can’t run forward while looking backward. Paul refused to be chained to past victories or vices. He shook off critics, forgave enemies, and encouraged others to move forward as well (Philippians 1:15-19; Philemon). Getting stuck isn’t failure—it’s often the doorway to growth. The key is to forgive, redeem, and move on.
    3.    Fired Up About the Future – Twice Paul says, “Press on.” He pictures a runner straining every muscle, fueled by passion and purpose. Howard Hendricks once noted, “The average person dies between two and seven years after retirement, and it’s simply because they have lost their purpose in life.” Paul shows us that pressing forward keeps the soul alive.

So keep running—eyes on Jesus, not the clock. The finish line isn’t about speed but about faithfulness. Press on.

Grace to you,
Cedric
