Grace in Deep Waters

“The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.”
— Jonah 2:5

Conversions are rarely comfortable, but they are always transformative. They place us in the middle of the river — beyond our comfort zones, stripped of control, and unable to steer. That’s where Jonah found himself: trapped in the belly of a fish, surrounded by storm above, sea below, and darkness within. He never saw it coming, but that interruption became one of the greatest gifts of his life — an encounter with grace that would echo through eternity.

If you’re in those deep waters, don’t panic. You’re not lost; you’re being positioned. Like Israel trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea, this is where God wants your full attention. In turbulent seasons, trust becomes your anchor. We must lose our footing before we can find new ground. We must be lost before we can be found.

These “middle-of-the-river” moments — those Damascus Road encounters and unexpected conversions — aren’t just inevitable; they’re necessary. Without them, we remain small and rigid. With them, we grow deeper, softer, and stronger. Doctrines tell us what to do, but experiences shape who we become. Abraham discovered that. God placed him in Canaan with nothing but a promise, and what seemed impossible transformed him from an idol worshiper into the father of faith.

The river isn’t meant to drown you — it’s meant to deliver you. And when you emerge on the other side, you’ll thank God not only for the calm banks but also for the wild middle that changed you.

Reflection Questions
    1.    Where in your life do you feel like you’re “in the middle of the river”?
    2.    How might God be using this deep-water season to grow your faith?
    3.    What step of trust is He inviting you to take today?

Grace to you,
