Money and Soul Conversation — Part 2
Anchor Passages: Luke 12:18–21; Ecclesiastes 2:26
So — bigger barns to hoard more stuff was the rich farmer’s response to his fear of insecurity (Luke 12:18–19). But an unexpected health crisis changed everything. Wealth is so unpredictable — and so unwise to build your life on.
Jesus, speaking for the soul, warned,
“‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’”
What a sad legacy — rich fool.
King Solomon’s reflection adds the divine counterpoint:
“To the person who pleases Him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner He gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.” — Ecclesiastes 2:26
God is an exceptional Steward. He has a way of redistributing what we hoard. How we handle wealth is no small matter, because gathering and enjoying success are not guaranteed. Jesus cautioned those two quarreling brothers at the start of the parable,
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” — Luke 12:15
We all long for a world that works for everyone — a world where no child goes hungry, where peace replaces violence, and where love outlasts revenge. But whether such a world ever becomes reality depends on how we balance the domains of money and soul.
God is watching. And He does not bless hoarding or scarcity thinking — the “not-enough-for-everybody” mindset. The divine economy is grace upon grace.
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr reminds us:
“The reign of God is a worldview of abundance. God lifts us up from a worldview of scarcity to infinity. Remember: every part of infinity is still infinite! God’s love is nothing less than infinite.”
Today’s Grace Reflection:
Don’t build bigger barns. Build a bigger heart.
