Mature Lover

“The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.’” (Jeremiah 31:3)

Jeremiah 31 sits in the middle of one of the most hope-drenched passages in all of Scripture. Israel had wandered far—spiritually, morally, and nationally. They had broken covenant, chased idols, ignored wisdom, and found themselves exiled in a land that reflected their own inner lostness. Yet into that far country, God spoke a word that none of them expected: “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

This is not the voice of a disappointed judge. This is the voice of a Mature Lover—One who loves long, deep, steady, and through the seasons of human failure. Jeremiah 31 is God’s declaration that wandering does not cancel belonging, and failure does not forfeit the future. Even in their rebellion, He says, “I am drawing you back—not with force, but with kindness.”

And that is still how He loves us.

Our Mature Lover allows us to wander into the far country, to test boundaries, to make mistakes, and even to fail meaningfully. Not because He delights in our detours, but because He knows what we will discover there—that nothing in the far country can satisfy what only the Father’s house can heal.

Yet when we finally reflect on His goodness—when we remember His faithfulness, recall His mercy, and awaken to His forgiveness—we realize the best decision is always the same: return home.

And when we do?
He meets us with Jeremiah 31 grace—an everlasting love and an unfailing kindness that redeems our lost years, rewrites our foolish choices, and resurrects dreams we buried in the dark. God aligns our wandering with His original purpose, not by erasing our failures, but by transforming them.

It’s almost as if we must fall forward into grace before we see His plan clearly.
Just ask Jonah, the Prodigal, Peter—and the rest of us.

He turns brokenness into beauty.
He turns wrong turns into new beginnings.
And those dark nights? He converts them into bright mornings lined with mercy.
