The Time Tension
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
— Matthew 6:33
When I was diagnosed with cancer, I stepped into a space I had never walked in before. My doctor couldn’t tell me if the cancer was in my bones until after surgery, so I had to wait. That in-between place—no answers yet, no guarantees—was an unfamiliar season of uncertainty.
In Matthew 6, Jesus talks to people who are living in that same emotional space: anxious, stretched thin, torn between responsibilities and fears. He names the tension directly—“What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?”—all the real-life pressures that make our time feel tight and our hearts feel overwhelmed. And then He gives a kingdom resolution:
Seek first.
Put God’s timing above your timing.
God’s agenda above your agenda.
That was the very tension I felt. Through friends, books, and worship, I sensed God pulling me closer. But I didn’t feel like I needed more time with Him. I had my own plans, my own schedule, my own priorities. That was the conflict: my time and God’s time moving in opposite directions.
Seven years later, I can see it differently. God wasn’t trying to take time from me—He was trying to align me, reposition me, synchronize me.
My time is chronos—seconds, minutes, hours. Busy. Measured. Controlled.
God’s time is kairos—the appointed moments: conversion, cancer, calling, breakthrough… the “right time” when God moves with purpose.
Chronos is what fills your calendar.
Kairos is what fulfills your life.
And here’s the thing Jesus makes clear in Matthew 6:
Worry accelerates chronos.
Worship opens kairos.
The question I had to face was simple:
Would I keep serving the god of my schedule, or would I seek first the God who holds my seasons?
So let me ask you—will you slow down and trust that God can align this stage of your life? You can treat time as a gift to steward or a god to serve. One leads to anxiety. The other leads to alignment.
Choose a consistent mini-Sabbath. Create breathing room where God can steady your pace, calm your fears, and reveal His agenda.
Because the time tension is rarely just a scheduling issue.
It’s a discipleship issue.
It exposes what you trust.
It reveals what you fear.
It uncovers what you worship.
Grace to you,
Cedric
